Island Paradise - Jamaica

This weeks feature is none other than the land of wood and water - Jamaica. Nestled in the beautiful Caribbean Sea, this island of 2.7 million inhabitants is the jewel in the Caribbean's crown. It is strategically located in the Greater Antilles and serves as an under-utilized gateway in that it is south of North America and north of South America. Furthermore, it is directly and indirectly surrounded by 3 major bodies if water: the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Being a mere 90 miles south of Cuba and not too far from the island of Hispaniola, Jamaica faces strong competition for tourists from its Spanish-speaking neighbors. The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Mexico (Cancun) provide fierce competition even in a global recession.

Despite this fact, Jamaica is able to hold its own and maintain its slice of the Tourism 'pie' by offering a unique visitor experience, one which keeps many coming back year after year. Jamaica with year-round sunshine and pristine white sand beaches remains the envy of many a country, and this despite internal worries which range from economic to social.

Feature Attraction - Dunn's River Falls
The world famous Dunns River Falls is precisely so - world famous, for more reasons than one. It is one of Jamaica's national treasures, a place almost synonymous with the name Jamaica. There are few places where the Arawak name "Xayamaca" - land of rivers and springs is more relevant. It is truly one of the most beautiful spots on the island.

Located near Ocho Rios, one of Jamaica's bustling resort centers, Dunn's River Falls is a unique natural wonder. With its location near to the sea, Dunn's River Falls has the distinction of being the only one of its kind in the Caribbean, if not the world. The waterfalls are staggered and span some 180 meters (600 feet). Several small lagoons exist there, interspersed between the vertical sections of the falls. Climbing up the waterfalls is a popular tourist activity and is often, but not exclusively performed with the help of tour guides from the park. The side of the falls is covered with lush, green vegetation that help shade the area from the sun. This helps keep the water cool as people try and climb the waterfall. The falls can be walked up with relative ease, often a human chain is used snaking up the falls behind the tour guide. Whenever you come to Jamaica, this is one attraction you do not want to miss!
